About Surname Generator

Surname Generatoris a free tool that produces realistic last names. Pick an origin — English, Japanese, Spanish, Irish, Russian, and 25+ more — and it samples from real, commonly recorded surnames of that culture. There are also generators for invented worlds: fantasy, D&D (by race) and sci-fi.

Where the names come from

For the origin-specific generators, the surname pools are drawn from public records — national census and civil-registry frequency lists. They are real family names, so use them thoughtfully: they're great for characters, games, mock data and placeholder content, but the tool does not look up real individuals.

For the fantasy / D&D / sci-fi generators, names are built from designed name-parts — those are invented, and free to use for your characters and worlds. The with-meanings generator pairs each surname with its genuine etymology, taken from standard surname references.
